World Alzheimer’s Month

It is estimated that nearly one million people in the UK today have dementia of some form. World Alzheimer's Month gives us the perfect opportunity to shine a spotlight on our charity partner, Dementia UK, who support those affected by the syndrome.  Dementia UK lunch and learn Health and Wellbeing is one of four pillars that form the foundations of our charity programme and with the rate of dementia diagnosis increasing every year, every single penny that Dementia UK can raise makes a real difference.

While Alzheimer’s is the most common form, dementia is a term used to describe a host of conditions that impair the sufferer’s ability to remember, think or make decisions that interfere with everyday activities. Every three minutes, someone in the UK is diagnosed with a form of dementia, leaving families to cope with the cognitive deterioration of a loved one with little support. That’s where Dementia UK and its team of Admiral Nurses come in.

Admiral Nurses help people living with dementia stay independent for as long as possible while providing crucial support to their carers. Family carers are often the forgotten victims of this disease, and Admiral Nurses are specially trained to support not just the person suffering from dementia but also their carers. In addition to providing personalised, hands-on support, these nurses work in local community services, GP practices and hospitals, care homes and hospices.

Often, these charities need more than financial support—they need wider society to become more educated on issues like dementia and better understand how we can support them. The work they do is so important, and we are really proud to partner with them.
In that spirit, earlier this year, we invited an Admiral Nurse to hold a lunch and learn at one of our offices. They shared advice on how to care for and support people with dementia and provided tips on how to spot its signs and symptoms.

It was a very eye-opening session, and we are repeating it later in the year at another site. This disease isn’t going to go away anytime soon but all of us can do something to raise funds or awareness to help support those affected.

We want to foster a welcoming community for TMHCC employees, where everyone can feel seen and heard while connecting with colleagues and having the opportunity to impact key issues that matter to them. Find out what it means to belong at TMHCC here.
